时值宝历年间。岩次郎（中川大志饰）在京都一家玩具店做学徒时，一位名叫大典（永山瑛太饰）的僧侣来到店里。大典对店里一幅神秘的画产生了浓厚的兴趣。这幅画的作者是锦市场一家蔬菜批发店的主人——桝屋源左卫门（中村七之助饰）。源左卫门是一个对女性和艺术毫无兴趣的男人，却在中年时迷上了绘画。某天，源左卫门在街上偶然遇到了一位神秘的仙人——卖茶翁（石桥莲司饰），卖茶翁将“若冲”这个名字赐予了他。在卖茶翁的介绍下，源左卫门与大典命运般地相遇了。大典对若冲说道：“我希望你能描绘出这世间的森罗万象。”于是，在大典的安排下，若冲开始在京都的寺庙里进行绘画的临摹修行……而在这幅杰作《动植彩绘》的背后，隐藏着男人们之间的深厚羁绊！
